My Pleasure Reading. Summary (pages 140-220)

Christmas, was unable to sleep, focuses his anger on Miss Burden. He felt he could forgive the fact that she'd lied to him about her age.

In the morning, Christmas went to a clearing, where he shaved and read a magazine.
Later he passed through the predominantly black part of town, then the white neighborhood.

The action then shifted to when Joe Christmas was five years old. Living in an orphanage, he went into the dietician’s room to steal some of her toothpaste. Suddenly, the dietician entered the room with a young male doctor, and Joe hided behind a curtain. The dietician and the man began to make love, and Joe, sick from eating too much toothpaste, vomited loudly and was discovered. The angry dietician shouted at him roughly.

After the incident, the dietician became paranoid that the boy would tell the director of the facility what he'd saw. She tried to buy him with a dollar to keep quiet, but he was too young to understand what had happened and did not accept the money. The dietician then came to the orphanage janitor, who confirmed her suggestions that the child was biracial. However, he refused to help the dietician brought that fact to matron, as it would result in the boy’s removal to an orphanage for black children.
Later, the janitor appeared at the dietician’s door, asking her what she planed to do with the boy. When he realized her intentions, the janitor disappeared with the child. The child was returned to the orphanage and, with the dietician’s intervention, was quickly adopted by a devoutly religious farmer, Mr. McEachern.

The article "Thoughts on ‘Innocence of Muslims’" was published on the website of Israeli daily English-language broadsheet newspaper Jerusalem Post on 23 September 2012 , by By Franck Salamen. This article carries a lot of comment of the film Innocence of Muslims.
Analyzing the situation it’s necessary to emphasize that the autor thought that whether in form, language, or content, the film made a mockery of basic standards of human decency, good taste, artistic subtlety and historical discernment. Its crassness was an affront to its subject matter, its intended audience, those involved in its production, and the community (or communities) that the producers were assumed to represent – in this case American Copts and by association Christians, and even Christendom and the West in more general terms.

Giving appraisal of the situation it’s necessary to point out that the author urges us not to ask who is the author of this abomination, and how might revenge be meted out? He considered that Muslims, Christians and others, people of goodwill everywhere, may wish to inquire why something was deemed blasphemous?

In this connection it’s worthwhile mentioning that there is a moral to this story. If one is looking to be offended – and “pick a bone,” as the saying goes – then Innocence of Muslims is crude, revolting offenses, rigged to inflame. If, on the other hand, one is willing to engage in civilized intercourse, even with those deemed unworthy of it, then the context of the offense might offer more clarity and more rewarding benefits than actual retribution.

Speaking about my opinion it coincides with the author's one. I believe that it wasn't a challenge to Muslims , it was just a horrible provocation in order to cause unrest. To find a person responsible for this action is really useless, because it's very likely that the film was paid by someone from the U.S. government. I agree that for Muslims this action is equal to the crime because faith very significant for them.

5 Principles for Teaching Journalism Ethics in the Digital Age by Stephen Ward, February 15, 2011
The article discusses two main questions. The first one is: How can journalists use the new media tools responsibly? And the second one :What to teach? The author states a brilliant idea that journalism ethics is a field where old and new values clash. I suppose it is one of the key phrases in this article. Analyzing the situation it is necessary to note that on one side are traditional values such as those found in the code of ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists.
On the other side are values of the "always on" universe of interactive media: immediacy, transparency, edgy opinion and partisan journalism, anonymity, and sharing.
The author mentions that nowadays we not only teach without a consensus, we lack an ethics that provides adequate guidance for the many new forms of mixed media. This phrase is also significant in the article and I'm fully agree with it.
Speaking about this problem we are to name 5 principles for teaching Journalism ethics in the digital age:
1. Start from the students' media world.
2. Assist students with reflective engagement.
3. Insist on critical thinking, not what is fashionable.
4. Be transitional.
5. Be global in your teaching.
In conclusion the author suggests that the teaching should challenge, not discourage. He stresses that students should see the turmoil in journalism as an exciting intellectual and practical challenge to develop a more adequate ethics for a new global mixed media.

LIONS FOR LAMBS

Cast: Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise, Michael Pena, Andrew Garfield, Peter Berg, Derek Luke, Josh Zuckerman

Director: Robert Redford

Synopsis:
Robert Redford makes a story of different lives that intertwines together ,the stories of an professor's approaches to animate a student, a former students of the professor who are shot down in Afghanistan, and a congressman whose communication with a journalist show much about him as an ordinary person.Robert Redford , Tom Cruise ,  Meryl Streep

Rewiew :
The whole story consists of three segments. Jasper Irving (Tom Cruise), a young senator, is interviewed by Janine Roth (Meryl Streep), a TV reporter. But the interview changes into a dispute. Cruise, doesn't give up. But Streep, put hesitancy and aggression, who wins this acting contest, and the reporter who trumps the senator's arguments — even if he then trumps her back, nailing the press' hypocrisy, its urge to duck any blame for first supporting the Iraq invasion.

This time, in California, Todd Hayes (Andrew Garfield), a college student, speaks with professor (Redford), who wants to know why he has been skipping his class. Their conversation might be called ''Why Try to Change a World That's Too Corrupt to Change?'' All of which leads to the third segment, in which two soldiers (Michael Peña and Derek Luke) — both former students of Redford — board a chopper in Afghanistan, as part of the surge Cruise's senator was selling.

This film is realistic one , as it shows the real situation of nowadays world. On the other hand it is predictable , because such problems we may face every day , that's why the movie seems boring for someone.

In conclusion i'd like to say that It is a good movie, but very trite. Nothing new to see or hear in this movie.

Obama's day: Campaigning in Colorado

The article discusses Obama's campaign trail in Colorado. Speaking of his statements it is necessary to note that he spoke early that afternoon as a "grass-roots event" in Golden, Colo., near Denver, talking about what his campaign calls "middle-class security."Behind the political scenes, the president will be following up on the attacks against U.S. diplomatic offices in Egypt and Libya, particularly the latter one that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. In conclusion the author suggests that the president may also have to deal with a new crisis today: Protesters are attacking the U.S. Embassy in Yemen.

a 80-100 word piece about the impression the story for my Home Reading Class has made

I was impressed by the story "The Unexpected" , because it turned out to be really unpredictable especially in the middle of it. I engoy this Kate Chopin's work , as such kind of situations take place in our everyday life. However nowadays it doesn't look unnormal or unexpectable, because  women and men have the same rights. The problems of  relationship , love , passion , freedom , choice were raised in this text , and I think it is very useful to discuss them in our class.
